YULIA KRIVICH | DARING AND YOUTH

“Daring & Youth” is the name of a hooligan band I met a few years ago. Young people in the photos are hoolies, ex-service volunteer soldiers, and political activists of the right-wing movement. At the same time, they belong to the globalized world of youth: they travel, party, fight for the rights of animals, and, like us all, create their image on the Internet. That clash of seemingly extremely different concepts has become the inspiration for my work.

I was taking photos and at the same time, participating in public interventions in the abandoned Palace of Culture and still acting Youth Palace in my hometown. There was a law implemented at that time on so-called “decommunization”.  In the first place, they began to dismantle monuments of communist leaders, then changed the names of streets and towns. While observing the ongoing transformation, I began to perceive “Daring & Youth” as a metaphor for modern political processes.

Yulia Krivich – born in Dnepr (Ukraine), lives in Warsaw. She graduated from the Academy of Architecture and Construction in her hometown and the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Participated in many solo and group exhibitions. She is a laureate of the Show OFF section of Krakow Photomonth Festival with the book “Feeling”, published by The Foundation for Visual Arts (2015). Scholar of the National Centre for Culture for the project “Daring & Youth.”
